Announcing Kanga Days of Service
Starting this fall, our beloved twice‑yearly Camp Sealth work parties will be renamed Kanga Days of Service, in honor of Jan “Kanga” Milligan. Jan’s legacy of giving back defines who we are and exemplifies the heart of Camp Sealth’s community.
Jan’s life was rooted in service long before she served as camp director from 1993 to 2008. A Camp Fire camper turned leader, she dedicated over 50 years to our camp designing programs, mentoring staff, and volunteering behind the scenes. After stepping down, Jan never stopped giving. She organized cabin curtain replacements, mowed lawns, and joined maintenance crews—even bringing her husband Doug along to help with repairs and work parties well into her retirement.
Known affectionately as “Kanga,” Jan had a forestry degree from Washington State University and was passionate about stewardship—whether it involved stewarding Camp Sealth’s wetland trails or engaging in island initiatives, such as the Rotary and Vashon CERT. Her efforts earned her recognition from the Evergreen Award for promoting volunteerism in Washington.
Renaming our service days acknowledges Jan’s vision that Camp Sealth is more than a summer destination—it’s an ever‑growing, caring community. The new Kanga Days of Service invites everyone—staff, alumni, families, and kids—to continue the work she loved. Whether hauling materials, painting cabins, building trails, or sharing a meal, each act is a tribute to her unstoppable energy and generosity.
Even today, Doug Milligan remains dedicated to the camp he and Jan supported so tirelessly. Naming these work days after Jan ensures her legacy lives on in every nail hammered, garden weeded, and friendship formed.
