A Unique Camp for Special Families

In 1994, Special Family Camp began when a group of teens saw a need for children with special needs to experience the excitement and adventure of summer camp. They felt that everyone deserved to take part in fun activities such as canoeing, archery, hikes, s’mores making and horse back riding. Special Family Camp was designed so they could do just that in a supportive and inclusive environment that was designed just for them.

Inclusion in Camp Fire

For many kids with special needs, there are few summer camp options available. Some kids lack the independence needed to succeed in a traditional camp setting. It can also be hard to find special needs camps that offer just the right amount of support for kids whose abilities and needs fall on a wider spectrum. Special Family Camp allows families to attend together, so kids have the personal support they need, while still experiencing all of the traditional aspects of summer camp.

During the first year of Special Family Camp, only a handful of families attended, but it has since grown and we now serve over 40 families. Many return year after year, and enjoy spending time with their favorite camp friends.

  • Adaptive Activities: Every activity can be adapted for each camper’s individual needs and we can make any accommodations needed. Whether a child needs more one-on-one attention, physical assistance, or extra time or space.
  • Flexible Scheduling: Each family that attends sets their own schedule for the weekend, so you only do the activities you want. Families can choose to make it an action-packed weekend or a relaxing getaway.
  • Inclusive Environment: One thing that our families appreciate about Special Family Camp is that no one feels like an outsider. When families arrive at camp, they are able to bond with other families, as well as be able to understand each other and give some helpful advice.
  • Our Dedicated Staff and Volunteers: Each year, a team of 40 staff and volunteers come to Camp Sealth to lead activities and spend time getting to know our families. Many of our volunteers have come back year after year, forming close bonds with the kids and their families. They are happy to go above and beyond each year to make sure that every family has an amazing camp experience.
